We’re only a month and a half into 2008, and already there’s singles from N.E.R.D. and Gnarls Barkley. So it’s looking like ’08 is shaping up to be a year in which I can actually look forward to music from artists I care about. After a year in which I rode heavy to Indie rock and actually resorted to listening to “Urban” radio out of boredom (and lack of a working iPod), I may actually buy some black folks albums this year. Here’s my looking forward to list in no order at all:
-Andre 3000 solo album (yes, he is really working on it right now).
-N.E.R.D. I really like the 1st single, subject matter aside. I have no doubt their album will be jammin’. Pharrell’s solo album was cool, but I’ve always appreciated how he kept his N.E.R.D. persona less jiggy than his other incarnations.
-Janelle Monáe: Let’s just say you’ll be hearing a lot of new music from this young lady this year. I’m not just excited about this because I’m a friend and colleague, because I’m genuinely a fan and every day this project becomes more and more jammin’. If only y’all could hear what I’ve been hearing. Ah ha!
-Gnarls Barkley: Their single “Run” is on iTunes now. Gitwitit.
-Big Boi solo album: My old boss and 1/2 of my favorite musical act of all time. He’s in the studio daily, and you should be hearing a single from him soon.
-Chester French: Good friends of JM and the W.A.S. They’re signed to the Neptunes’ “Star Trak” label. For those Beatles and Beach Boys fans, imagine if Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson grew up in the Hip-Hop era and did music together. http://www.myspace.com/chesterfrench
-Deep Cotton: http://www.myspace.com/deepcotton for a preview. (Shhhh… Hurry before they decide to take the music down.)
So in honor of some of the names on my list, and as sort of a preview for my next post, I leave you this gem from one of the coldest collective of artists ever:
